Think about heating like a designer, not just like a technician

We explain why heating deserves to be considered as an integral part of the architectural project, just like volumes, light or materials.


In the majority of development or renovation projects, heating is still mainly approached from a technical angle. It is a question of power, surface to be heated, installation constraints or standards to be met. These elements are obviously essential, and no project can ignore them. However, they are not enough on their own to guarantee a successful interior. A space is not limited to its technical performance: it is lived, it perceives itself, it is experienced on a daily basis. And in this global experience, the heating plays a much more structuring role than we imagine.



An approach that is still too often relegated to the end of the project

In many cases, the heating is late in the design. The volumes have already been defined, the materials selected, and the furniture considered. The project already has an identity, an aesthetic direction, a logic of circulation. The heating then fits into this whole, often in a logic of adaptation rather than reflection.

This way of doing things leads to compromises. A radiator can come and cut a wall, constrain the layout of a piece of furniture, or catch the eye when it should have been forgotten. In a design approach, heating becomes an assumed choice, not a constraint.


Reconcile technical performance and architectural intent

It’s not a matter of opposing technology and design. The two are complementary. A successful project is based on a balance between performance and aesthetic coherence.

The performance ensures homogeneous heat, controlled consumption and lasting comfort. But it must be part of a broader vision, where heating is designed in connection with space.

The real challenge is to bring these two dimensions into dialogue, rather than dealing with them separately.


A broader view of thermal comfort

Thinking about heating like a designer also broadens the notion of thermal comfort. Comfort is not limited to a temperature. It depends on the diffusion of heat, its stability and how it is felt.

A room can be heated to the right temperature and remain uncomfortable if the heat is poorly distributed. Conversely, a lower temperature can be pleasant if the heat is homogeneous and well distributed.

Comfort then becomes an experience, not just a number.


Putting heating back at the heart of architectural thinking

Today, rethinking heating in a design logic means recognizing that it is fully part of the experience of space.

Its presence, positioning and way of spreading heat directly contribute to the overall quality of a project. A well-designed heating system supports the use of traffic and helps to create a coherent and pleasant atmosphere. Conversely, integrated heating too late or without reflection can disrupt the balance of the space, create layout constraints or alter the perception of volumes.


To consider it only as a technical element is therefore to miss out on a real design lever. It is to limit its role to a function, whereas it can become a tool in the service of comfort, aesthetics and architectural coherence.

Conversely, when it is integrated from the first phases of reflection, heating naturally fits into the project. It dialogues with the other elements: light, materials, lines, uses. It is no longer added; it participates.
